Progress in unconventional electronics and sustainable flexible sensing technologies

Reducing electronic waste to minimize environmental impact is a major and timely research challenge. The proposed symposium will focus on state of the art research showcases around unconventional and emerging developments in material science, electronic components and future application scenarios.

Scope:

Flexible electronics is an ever-growing field of research that seamlessly unites advanced materials, manufacturing and a broad range of the engineering/natural science community. From large area electronics to healthcare devices to emerging human/computer interfaces, there is no dearth of new applications.

However, increasing ubiquity of electronics in our daily lives also leads to a dire waste and resource management challenge. Furthermore, widespread concerns regarding sustainability and net-zero technologies have a direct bearing on the flexible electronics and sensing communities. This has motivated a number of exciting and promising breakthroughs in the field of circular, soft, and advanced materials. These aim at unconventional electronics functions while also addressing issues such as removing harmful chemicals from device fabrication, the development of new nature-inspired solutions and, perhaps most strikingly, the implementation of alternative strategies for prototyping. This inevitably requires a concomitant and continuous progress and breakthroughs in micro/nanomanufacturing technologies.

The current symposium will focus on emerging technologies and progress in functional and nature-inspired materials as well as novel manufacturing strategies, which are being explored for future flexible electronics applications with minimal environmental burden, ultra-low energy consumptions etc. A series of keynotes and invited presentations will be used to curate an active engagement and conversation on the topic. The organizers will also follow this up with a special issue publication in MRS Advances.

Hot topics to be covered by the symposium:

  • Biodegradable Functional Materials for Flexible and Printed Electronics
  • Bioresorbable Materials for Sensors and Actuators
  • Smart Implants and Human-Machine Interfaces
  • Agriculture and Food Applications
  • Materials/Electronics for Bio- and Circular Economy
  • Low-cost, green and large-area manufacturing
  • Ultra-thin, Stretchable, and Mechanically Imperceptible Systems

Publication:
